Most people think that after completing the orthodontic treatment the teeth are going to remain straight or well aligned for the lifetime.
But unfortunately it is not so.
The teeth do have a memory which makes the teeth go back to their original positions.
We call these as relapse. There might be gaps in the teeth and with braces the gaps have been closed.
Once the braces have been taken out the pressure is released and the teeth tends to move back and the gaps tend to re-open.
This is one of the examples of relapse. To avoid relapse it is very important that the patient need to have retainers.
