How Enamel is Lost

Tooth enamel is the strongest substance in the human body, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not prone to decay.

Your teeth are constantly subjected to destructive substances, like the sugar and acids found in your food, as well as the risks of damage and injury.

You may not even notice your tooth enamel has worn down, so here are some things to watch out for and what you can do about preventing enamel loss.

Tooth enamel is the hard outer substance of the tooth that protects the softer and more sensitive inner tooth, called dentin.

If the enamel is exposed to destructive bacteria bred from sugars and starches, or to acids from citrus fruits and coffee, for example, the substance starts to break down.

This is why it is so important to properly brush and floss your teeth at least twice each day to make sure that these harmful substances don’t stay in contact with your tooth enamel for too long.
