E-Cigarettes Harmful to Gums and Teeth

A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Rochester in New York suggests that Electronic cigarettes could be as harmful to gums and teeth as regular cigarettes.

The study, which was published in the journal Oncotarget, found that the flavoring chemicals used in e-cigarettes also play a role in damaging cells in the mouth.

The scientists exposed nonsmokers' gum tissue to e-cigarette vapors, and according to study leader Irfan Rahman, "We showed that when the vapors from an e-cigarette are burned, it causes cells to release inflammatory proteins" that "aggravate stress within cells, resulting in damage that could lead to various oral diseases."

The team's findings appear to counter arguments that the battery-operated devices are a healthier alternative to cigarette smoking, and that more research is needed to better understand the adverse health effects of e-cigarettes.
